Prince Harry has revealed that he currently has no plans to apply for American citizenship, despite living in California with his wife, Meghan Markle, since 2020. Speaking on the Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know podcast, the Duke of Sussex was asked directly whether he intended to become a U.S. citizen and responded, “There are no plans to be, at this point.” The royal couple moved to the United States after stepping back from their official duties and now reside in Montecito, where they are raising their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The Duke’s latest comments follow earlier remarks in which he admitted to having “considered” the idea of citizenship, though he described it as “not a high priority.” In a February 2024 interview with Good Morning America, Harry said he loved living in the United States but didn’t necessarily “feel American.” During the podcast, he also shared some light-hearted details about his new life, revealing that surfing had become his “most American” habit, but joked that he still avoids drinking Coors Light or wearing shorts in restaurants.
Host Hasan Minhaj encouraged Harry to try an American accent, prompting the Duke to laugh as he attempted to say, “I ordered breadsticks with ranch dressing at Applebee’s.” The conversation offered a rare glimpse into his sense of humour and his ability to poke fun at himself. The Duke also discussed how he and Meghan have embraced several American traditions with their children, such as visiting Disneyland and pumpkin picking ahead of Halloween.

Meanwhile, Meghan Markle previously shared that she once studied for the UK citizenship exam after her engagement to Prince Harry in 2017, though she did not complete the process. Speaking on her Archetypes podcast in 2022, she described the test as “so hard,” admitting she often asked her husband questions he couldn’t answer. Despite their transatlantic life, the Sussexes continue to maintain ties with both the UK and the United States, balancing royal heritage with a Californian lifestyle.
