Kate Beckinsale described saying goodbye to her mother as “the hardest thing” she has ever experienced. The 51-year-old actress’ mother, Judy Loe, passed away in July after a battle with stage four cancer. Beckinsale shared photographs from the celebration of life she organised in her mother’s honour and praised the outpouring of love shown at the event.

On Instagram, Beckinsale wrote of her mother: “Dearest Mama, the fact that you have had to have a funeral at all is wrong and ludicrous. You are the biggest lover of life, the most energetic, vital, and joyous.” She noted that her mother had requested a celebration rather than a traditional funeral, instructing that no one wear black. Beckinsale described the event at Chiswick House, where attendees danced and celebrated across generations, and said the love inspired by her mother was “awe-inspiring.”
The actress reflected on her grief, admitting she still reaches for her phone in the early hours, expecting to message her mother. She wrote: “I will never get over the lump of cement in my stomach that I have instead of you. Hopefully, I will learn to carry it better than I am currently carrying it, which is clumsily and not well.” Beckinsale also acknowledged the supportive network of friends and family her mother nurtured, describing it as “another part of your generosity that will live on.”

Beckinsale first announced her mother’s death on Instagram, admitting she felt “paralysed” by her loss. She revealed that Judy Loe died in her arms on the night of 15 July and apologised to friends who may have learned the news through social media or the press. Beckinsale wrote: “I have not picked all the best photos, nor the best videos, because I cannot bear to go through my camera roll yet. I deeply apologise to any of her friends who are finding out this way, but I cannot go through her phone.”
