India and Pakistan enhance defence capabilities amid rising tensions

Date:

India and Pakistan have both announced new defence measures following recent disagreements over trade and military matters. The Indian prime minister confirmed plans for a new defence system, named the Sudarshan Chakra, after a four-day military clash with Pakistan in May. Mr Modi emphasised that India would no longer tolerate nuclear threats, stating that “for a long time, nuclear blackmail had been going on, but this blackmail will not be tolerated now.”

Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed the creation of a new Army Rocket Force Command during Independence Day celebrations. Details of the new force remain limited, but the announcement underscores Pakistan’s intention to strengthen its military capabilities in response to regional tensions.

The two nations celebrate their Independence Days on consecutive days, reflecting their shared but often turbulent history. India and Pakistan both emerged from the partition of British India in 1947, a process marked by widespread communal violence that left hundreds of thousands dead and forced some 12 million people to flee their homes.

These developments come amid ongoing negotiations between the two countries, particularly concerning India’s farm and dairy sectors and Pakistan’s purchase of Russian oil. The announcements indicate that both nations are increasingly focused on bolstering their defence systems while managing longstanding political and economic disputes.
