Eubank Jr and Benn set for anticipated rematch amid controversy and legacy

Date:

Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn are set to face off once more this September in a highly anticipated rematch at a yet-to-be-confirmed London venue. Their previous bout, held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April, ended in a unanimous decision victory for Eubank Jr after an explosive and gripping contest. The fight echoed the iconic rivalry between their fathers, Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn, who famously clashed 35 years ago.

Speculation continues over the venue for the second bout. While Spurs’ stadium is under contract, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn hinted that Wembley Stadium might be considered due to the bout’s growing popularity. Hearn told Ring magazine that “it was sold out and this fight’s even bigger, so you could possibly look at Wembley to increase the capacity”. The weight class for the rematch remains undecided, adding an extra layer of intrigue.

Eubank Sr has voiced strong criticism of the first fight, claiming that the British Boxing Board of Control and Matchroom acted irresponsibly by allowing his son to fight at the middleweight limit of 160lbs. The elder Eubank, who believes his son was severely dehydrated, typically fights at 175lbs. Conor Benn, on the other hand, had never competed above the super-welterweight limit of 154lbs prior to that bout.

The original fight had been delayed after Benn tested positive for the banned substance clomifene in 2022. He denied any wrongdoing and was later cleared by the National Anti-Doping Panel. An independent report attributed the result to excessive egg consumption, a claim that became part of the promotional spectacle, culminating in Eubank hitting Benn with an egg during a heated press conference.
