Sam Thompson faces injury setback but remains determined ahead of soccer aid match

Date:

Sam Thompson has reluctantly accepted that he is unlikely to be match fit for next week’s Soccer Aid following a painful calf injury sustained during his emotional charity mission. The 32-year-old TV, radio, and podcast personality captured the nation’s heart after winning I’m A Celebrity in 2023, and recently demonstrated his dedication by delivering the official Soccer Aid match ball from London’s Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford, covering 260 miles on foot and by bike over five gruelling days.

The challenge, which began on Monday and finished on Friday, saw Thompson endure heavy rain, physical exhaustion, and a torn calf muscle. Despite the injury, he remains positive, though he now expects to support the game from the sidelines rather than playing. “I don’t think I’m going to be able to play,” he told the Standard, who have closely followed his journey. “My calf is pretty torn. But I’ll definitely be there one way or another — they can’t get rid of me.” Donations for the cause remain open, with the final amount due to be revealed during the Soccer Aid match for Unicef on Saturday 15 June.

Thompson’s emotional journey is documented in a special programme, Sam Thompson’s Match Ball Mission, airing on Thursday 13 June at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX. One poignant moment came on day three when, overwhelmed with self-doubt and exhaustion, Thompson broke down in tears. A heartfelt conversation with his best friend and co-host Pete Wicks helped him regain confidence. Supporters have been quick to praise Thompson’s openness and resilience, with many describing him as a much-needed role model for young people.

The upcoming Soccer Aid for Unicef match will be broadcast live on ITV1 and streamed on ITVX and STV, featuring celebrities and football legends facing off as England take on the Soccer Aid World XI FC. Despite his injury setback, Thompson remains an inspiration both on and off the pitch, having also been selected for the England team alongside notable figures such as Wayne Rooney, Louis Tomlinson, Jill Scott, Sir Mo Farah, and Paddy McGuinness.
