Prince Harry suggests security downgrade aimed to discourage royal exit

Date:

Prince Harry has reportedly claimed that the decision to reduce his police protection may have been a deliberate move to dissuade him and Meghan Markle from stepping back as working royals. According to The Telegraph, which cites private evidence from his ongoing legal battle with the Home Office, the Duke of Sussex believes his “worst fears” have been realised. The report has been firmly denied by Buckingham Palace sources.

The case centres around the 2020 decision made by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec), which ruled that Harry would no longer receive automatic police protection while in the UK. The duke is currently appealing the dismissal of his High Court claim challenging this decision. Speaking outside the Royal Courts of Justice, he said people would be “shocked by what’s being held back” and described feeling “exhausted” and “overwhelmed” by the process.

In legal submissions, Harry’s barrister, Shaheed Fatima KC, argued that the duke had been treated differently and unfairly, receiving “inferior” protection despite the risks. The Home Office, however, maintains that Ravec acted lawfully and that security arrangements are made on a case-by-case basis. They argue that Harry’s challenge fails to consider the full context and nuances of the committee’s judgment.

During the so-called Sandringham summit in early 2020, it was made clear to the Sussexes that stepping back from senior royal duties would mean forfeiting automatic police protection. A “bespoke” alternative was introduced, requiring the couple to give 30 days’ notice before travelling to the UK. A Court of Appeal ruling is expected in writing at a later date, with judges indicating it is unlikely to be delivered before Easter.
