The upcoming dark comedy The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, is set to arrive in UK cinemas on 1st September. The film, a modern remake of the 1989 classic The War of the Roses, reimagines the original story of marital collapse through a sharp, contemporary lens. Colman and Cumberbatch portray Ivy and Theo, a seemingly perfect couple whose relationship begins to unravel when professional success tips disproportionately in Ivy’s favour.

Though their lives appear idyllic, with thriving careers and a loving family, Theo’s sudden career decline and Ivy’s rising fortune ignite deep-seated resentments. As the balance in their marriage shifts, their once-stable relationship spirals into chaos. The UK release, unusually set for a Monday, follows its US premiere scheduled for 29th August.
Directed by Jay Roach and written by Tony McNamara — best known for The Favourite — the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Alongside the two leads, the cast includes Ncuti Gatwa, Andy Samberg, Jamie Demetriou, Allison Janney, Kate McKinnon, Zoë Chao, and Belinda Bromilow. Both Colman and Cumberbatch also serve as producers under their respective production banners, South of the River and SunnyMarch.

Commenting on the project, Colman and her producing partner Ed Sinclair said: “We have been cooking this up with our friends at SunnyMarch for some time, and it has been an absolute thrill to see it spring into life under Jay’s passionate and thoughtful guidance.” With a script helmed by McNamara and Roach’s directorial flair, The Roses promises to deliver a sharp, darkly comedic take on modern relationships.
