Tom Hardy reveals Spider-Man and Venom crossover “Got Close” to happening

Date:

Tom Hardy has revealed that a long-anticipated crossover between his Venom character and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man very nearly came to fruition. The actor’s portrayal of Eddie Brock appeared in the post-credit scenes of Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) and Spider-Man: No Way Home, sparking excitement among fans who hoped the two characters would finally share the screen. Despite the tease, the pair were ultimately returned to their respective universes, and the potential for a joint storyline remains unrealised.

Speaking on The Discourse podcast by The Playlist, Hardy confirmed that the crossover came tantalisingly close to happening. “We got close,” he said, noting that while a joint film never materialised, it had been strongly considered. Although Hardy didn’t go into detail, he hinted that studio politics may have played a part, adding cryptically, “And for all the reasons that you explained ultimately in there.”

Hardy explained that his motivation for the crossover was deeply rooted in the fanbase, particularly children. “As much as adults love superhero films, I’m constantly reminded by children how important these characters are,” he said. “They don’t understand why their favourite characters aren’t in films together.” While Venom 3, titled The Last Dance, is confirmed as the final film in the franchise, Hardy’s comments leave open the possibility of returning to the role in some other form.

Despite the third film being the final entry in the Venom trilogy, Hardy has made clear that he’s not ready to fully say goodbye to the character. “I feel a sense of obligation, responsibility and duty of care to Eddie and Venom that will never end,” he said in a previous interview. “I’d play them any time, anywhere, in any capacity.” With no official plans for a crossover in Spider-Man 4, fans will have to wait and see whether the two beloved characters will ever share the screen.
